April 14
today I watched a discussion
about asparagus
about how to cook it stew it chop it pare it
the acidity content and how it depends upon
the length of the stalk
about how many in a bunch
comparable prices
the way to season it depending on the season and
the way to eat it in relation to the speed of consumption—
how they must occur in tandem and how
depending on the seasoning and the
internal temperature and outside
the equilibrium can be so
easily disturbed (they must be considered together:
erroneous spicing in the heat of the day
or chilled night will lead to certain
inevitable calamity)
it is a most peculiar of bonds
between the stalk-creator and
consumer. they transpose positions;
with the pecuniary exchange he eats
and she eats and she loses what she has gained
and gains what he has birthed and lost
what he has cultivated she will devour
but devour it she will, lovingly,
the consumption
will penetrate her mouth with some
sort of learned pleasure
from their dialogue and from the
filling inside her belly
asparagus who would have known
in season in April
oh how we meet each other in April
how over asparagus, spirits converge
how curious how curious indeed
